Jewel McGowan Watson

Vice President, Corporate Counsel
The Prudential Insurance Company of America

Jewel McGowan Watson, Esq. is a corporate executive, attorney, public policy leader, philanthropist, and community advocate whose career has been defined by a commitment to excellence, service, and creating pathways for others to succeed.

A first-generation immigrant from Georgetown, Guyana, Jewel has spent more than 20 years leading at the intersection of law, business, public policy, and community impact. Today, she serves as Vice President, Corporate Counsel at The Prudential Insurance Company of America, where she oversees complex litigation for multiple business lines and advises senior executives on legal risk, governance, and enterprise strategy. Throughout her career, she has represented Fortune 500 companies and institutional clients in high-stakes litigation across the country, helping shape precedent while navigating some of the most complex legal and business challenges facing corporate America.

Yet Jewel’s influence extends far beyond the courtroom.

A lifelong advocate for equity and opportunity, she has dedicated her career to opening doors for others. From her early work as a New York City Urban Fellow and Special Assistant to the Commissioner of the Administration for Children’s Services—where she helped develop innovative juvenile justice and reentry programs for youth—to her leadership in advancing diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, Jewel has consistently used her platform to drive meaningful change.

Within the legal community, she has served in numerous leadership roles, including Chief Financial Officer and former Co-Chief Diversity Officer of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association, Chair of Prudential’s Third-Party Association, former Chair of the Focus Attorney Program, Trustee of the Rutgers Law School Alumni Association, and member of multiple boards and organizations committed to expanding access, opportunity, and justice. Her leadership has helped strengthen pipelines for diverse talent, increase representation within the profession, and support organizations serving historically underserved communities.

Jewel’s commitment to service is equally evident in her philanthropic and civic work. She has served on the boards of organizations dedicated to educational equity, civil rights, and leadership development, including the New Jersey Law and Education Empowerment Project, People’s Preparatory Charter School, and the Young Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. She is also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, continuing a lifelong commitment to scholarship, service, and social action.

An accomplished speaker, mentor, and thought leader, Jewel regularly shares insights on leadership, resilience, professional development, and navigating success with purpose. She is the founder of Thankful Thursday, a community centered on gratitude and connection, and creator of Light House Conversations, a platform that highlights the stories, lessons, and journeys of accomplished women.

Perhaps her most meaningful work is the work closest to home. Together with her son, Thor, Jewel co-founded Kidz That Give, a youth-led service organization designed to teach young people the power of civic engagement, generosity, and leadership. Through the organization, she is helping cultivate the next generation of changemakers while modeling the values that have guided her own life and career.

A graduate of Syracuse University, where she was selected as a Remembrance Scholar—the institution’s highest undergraduate honor—and Rutgers Law School–Newark, where she served as President of the Association of Black Law Students, Jewel has built a career that reflects both professional excellence and purposeful leadership. Her journey has included service as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Helen E. Hoens of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, counsel at a leading law firm, public policy advisor, nonprofit leader, and trusted advisor to C-suite executives.

She credits her success to the sacrifices of her parents, the strength of her community, and an unwavering belief that true leadership is measured not only by personal achievement, but by how many lives are impacted along the way. Whether in the boardroom, the courtroom, or the community, Jewel McGowan Watson continues to lead with vision, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to creating opportunities for others to thrive.
