Percy Boateng, MD, is an Associate Professor in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and National Director of the Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center at The Mount Sinai Hospital. He also serves as the Residency Training Program Director for the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine.
Dr. Boateng specializes in mitral valve repair, minimally invasive surgery, and re-operative heart surgery. Since joining the Mount Sinai team more than a decade ago, Dr. Boateng has developed special expertise in advanced mitral valve repair for patients needing re-operations on past surgeries.
“I like being a heart surgeon because it makes a difference in people’s lives,” Dr. Boateng said, noting a lifelong interest in nature, science and medicine. “If I can alleviate someone’s suffering, I have achieved my goal.” In addition to treating cardiac patients in New York, Dr. Boateng is working to establish a surgical valve repair program in his native Ghana, where most people suffering valve disease have no access to the advanced care their condition requires.
Prior to joining the Mount Sinai team, Dr. Boateng was an Assistant Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. While at Drexel, his clinical practice encompassed all aspects of adult cardiac surgery and general thoracic surgery, with a special emphasis on beating-heart coronary revascularization, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory assist devices for heart failure.
Earlier, he served for five years as Medical Director for the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, maintained a private practice, and taught at the University of Maryland. Committed to advancing standards of patient treatment globally, Dr. Boateng has delivered many invited lectures and has published widely in leading medical journals, including the Journal of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Journal of Surgical Education, and JAMA Cardiology. He has also contributed to textbooks including Key Topics in Cardiac Surgery, A Practical Approach to Cardiac Anesthesia, and TSRA – Decision Algorithms in Cardiac Surgery.
Dr. Boateng earned his BS from Howard University in 1994 and graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore in 1998. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center from 1998- 2003 and a cardiothoracic fellowship at Hahnemann Hospital from 2003 -2006 Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery and General Surgery, Dr. Boateng is an elected member of Member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the world’s oldest and most prestigious professional organization dedicated to thoracic surgery.
